The gap that remains between who we wish we were and who we truly are is pride.

More on Pride
We all have an ideal version of ourselves who we wish we were. The problem is that instead of making the journey from who we are to becoming that better person, we simply attempt to be that person immediately. The problem with that jump, is that all of the things that make that ideal version of ourselves so ideal are produced by the challenges and lessons that are experienced in transforming from our present self to our ideal self. What happens when we simply assume our place as this ideal version of ourselves, is that we attempt to portray the traits that we only wish we possessed. We then expend our whole efforts in trying to sustain a version of ourselves that we have not yet attained. We do this at first to convince others that we are in fact our "better self," and eventually fool ourselves into thinking that we are better than we actually are.
